The NEP 2020 Compliance Crisis: Why Buying Robotic Kits Fails Competency Mandates

The National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and recent CBSE/ICSE board circulars have made one requirement unmistakably clear: schools must shift from rote memorization to competency-based, experiential learning.

For school leadership, this has triggered a compliance scramble. Principals and academic directors are tasked with demonstrating tangible practical hours to board inspectors and skeptical parents.

Handing a child a kit with a twenty-step pictorial instruction manual does not fulfill the spirit of NEP 2020. It actively subverts it.

The kit manufacturer solved every genuine engineering problem in a factory before the box ever reached the school. The student is merely acting as a quality-control inspector verifying that the factory parts fit together.

NEP 2020 does not ask for mechanical assembly. It asks for competency, the ability to apply fundamental scientific principles to unscripted, novel problems.

Teaching Science Using Everyday Items in the Regular Syllabus

The biggest failure of the kit model is that it sits completely disconnected from the daily academic timetable. It is treated as a Saturday hobby club or a separate extracurricular period.

While the student assembles a toy car on Saturday, their Monday to Friday physics and math classes remain completely untouched, dry blackboard theory, memorizing formulas for force, torque, and pressure.

Competency-based learning only works when the physical experiment is the direct foundation of the textbook concept:

  • When teaching Bernoulli's principle, do not show a cartoon video. Hand students two strips of paper and let them blow air between them to feel the pressure drop directly.
  • When teaching structural trusses, do not lecture on formulas. Have them bridge two books with a single sheet of paper and observe why triangular folds hold fifty coins while flat paper collapses.
